Delhi government considers cloud-seeding trials to combat post-festival air pollution

Delhi's administration is exploring cloud-seeding as a potential intervention to address the seasonal spike in air pollution expected after major festivals, according to reports. The state government may initiate trial runs of the weather modification technique in the coming weeks as pollution levels typically worsen during October and November.

Cloud-seeding works by introducing fine particles of chemicals such as silver iodide and sodium chloride into suitable cloud formations. These particles act as nuclei around which water vapor condenses, theoretically triggering precipitation that can help clear pollutants from the atmosphere.

The move reflects growing efforts by Delhi's authorities to tackle the capital's severe air quality challenges during winter months. Previous years have seen pollution levels reach hazardous levels, prompting multiple interventions including traffic restrictions, construction bans, and industrial limitations.

While cloud-seeding has shown promise in various regions globally, its effectiveness in urban environments remains subject to scientific debate. The trials would provide data on the technique's viability as part of Delhi's broader air quality management strategy.

Authorities have not yet announced specific timelines or funding details for the proposed cloud-seeding operations.
