Delhi halts new traffic fine rule requiring advance penalty payment

Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced the suspension of the new traffic fine system following feedback from legal professionals who raised objections to its implementation.

The regulation, which would have required vehicle owners to deposit half of the prescribed penalty amount before challenging a traffic challan in court, has been temporarily halted pending further review. Singh said the concerns raised by the legal fraternity were taken seriously by the transport department.

The rule was designed to streamline the traffic enforcement system in the capital, where congestion and traffic violations remain persistent challenges. However, legal experts had flagged potential issues with the advance payment requirement, arguing it could place undue financial burden on citizens exercising their right to appeal.
