Delhi HC declines to initiate action over suspended officer's remarks on advocates

The Delhi high court declined to proceed on its own initiative regarding remarks made by a suspended Additional Commissioner of Police that drew criticism from the legal community for their derogatory nature. A delegation of advocates had moved the court, urging it to take suo motu cognisance of the incident and initiate appropriate proceedings against the officer.

The advocates contended that the suspended police official had employed language demeaning to the legal fraternity, warranting intervention by the court. They argued that such statements undermined the dignity of the profession and warranted judicial notice to uphold professional standards.

However, the high court bench declined to exercise its suo motu powers in the matter. The court's decision suggests that while the remarks may have been objectionable, the bench did not find sufficient grounds to initiate proceedings on its own motion.

The incident reflects ongoing tensions between law enforcement and the legal community in the capital. The suspended officer's remarks had prompted widespread concern among lawyers, leading to the collective approach to the court seeking formal action and censure.
