The Delhi High Court on Wednesday accepted urgent hearing requests from two separate groups of petitioners challenging recent orders by law enforcement authorities. The court will consider pleas filed by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka against a judicial custody extension granted by a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM), as well as a separate petition by All India Students' Association (AISA) president Neha Bora.
Das and Ranka have challenged an SEM order from October 19 that extended their judicial custody by two days. The party leaders approached the high court despite it being closed this week for the Dussehra holiday period, underscoring the urgency they attribute to their case. Justice Subramonium Prasad agreed to take up the matter.
Meanwhile, Bora's petition contests a Delhi Police notice dated October 17 issued under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The notice directed her to appear before an SEM on October 19 and explain why she should not execute a personal bond of Rs 10,000 with a surety for maintaining peace during an inquiry period. The BNSS provision grants SEMs authority to compel individuals to furnish bonds aimed at maintaining public order.
