The judicial strength of the Delhi High Court has increased to 50 following a recent appointment, bringing the bench closer to its authorized complement. The high court operates under a sanctioned strength of 60 judges, comprising 45 permanent positions and 15 additional judgeships.
The appointment comes at a time when Indian high courts have faced persistent vacancies that strain their capacity to clear mounting case backlogs. Delhi High Court, which handles a substantial volume of litigation across multiple benches, has long sought to operate at fuller strength to expedite case disposal.
With the current strength standing at 50, the court now has space for 10 more judicial appointments to reach its full sanctioned capacity. The recruitment of additional judges is typically handled through constitutional processes involving the judiciary, central government, and the Supreme Court Collegium.
The Delhi High Court remains one of the nation's busiest judicial forums, adjudicating matters ranging from constitutional law to commercial and criminal disputes. Maintaining adequate judicial strength is considered essential for efficient case management and timely delivery of justice across its jurisdiction.
