Delhi High Court nullifies seven ITAT orders in Patanjali tax dispute

The Delhi High Court has quashed seven orders passed by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in connection with the Patanjali case, finding significant procedural deficiencies in their handling. The bench noted that the tribunal had proceeded with undue haste in disposing of the appeals, failing to provide adequate reasoning for its decisions.

In its judgment, the court highlighted the absence of proper deliberation and logical analysis in the ITAT's orders. The tribunal was found to have overlooked critical aspects of the appeals, leading to decisions that lacked the necessary judicial rigor expected in tax adjudication matters.

The High Court has now ordered that the seven appeals be reheard by a differently constituted ITAT bench. This directive ensures that the matters receive fresh consideration with proper application of legal principles and adequate reasoning to support any conclusions reached.

The case involves the popular Ayurveda and consumer goods company Patanjali, which has been engaged in tax-related disputes with the revenue authorities. The High Court's intervention underscores the judiciary's commitment to maintaining procedural standards in tax litigation and ensuring that appellate decisions meet established benchmarks for reasoned judgment.
