Delhi High Court overhauls Senior Advocate selection process with new framework

The Delhi High Court has restructured its mechanism for appointing Senior Advocates, eliminating a previous panel-based system in favour of direct Full Court oversight. The decision marks a significant shift in how the judiciary's senior-most practitioners are identified and designated within India's capital.

Under the revised framework, a permanent secretariat will now administer the entire process of Senior Advocate selection, streamlining procedures that were previously fragmented. The Full Court—comprising all judges of the Delhi High Court—will retain final decision-making authority on designations, ensuring greater institutional transparency and collective judicial input.

The new rules supersede guidelines that were notified in March 2024, reflecting the Court's assessment that the previous framework required substantial refinement. By centralizing administration through a dedicated secretariat while expanding the decision-making body to the Full Court, the High Court aims to enhance the credibility and inclusivity of the Senior Advocate designation process.
