Delhi High Court Presses Tough Questions in Activist Custody Case

Justice Subramanyam Prasad's bench at the Delhi High Court on Monday heard arguments against the extended custody order for activists Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, as well as challenges to the rejection of their sureties. The proceedings also included consideration of a bail petition from All India Students Association (AISA) president Neha Bora, who has sought release on a bond of Rs 10,000.

During the hearing, the bench posed sharp questions to the petitioners regarding procedural matters, including queries about the status of the Jantar Mantar protest site and related administrative changes. The court's line of questioning suggested close scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the activists' detention.

The case centers on the validity of the custody extension order and the dismissal of sureties for Das and Ranka. The high court's intervention comes as the activists challenge the lower court's decision to keep them in continued detention.

The bench did not immediately announce its decision on the petitions, indicating that orders would be reserved for a subsequent hearing. The case highlights ongoing judicial review of detention proceedings in the national capital.
