Delhi High Court seeks FSSAI response on synthetic paneer petition

The Delhi High Court has sought the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India's (FSSAI) position on a public interest litigation that challenges the unrestricted sale of non-dairy and analogue paneer in the national capital.

The petition highlights action taken by neighbouring states to curb the distribution of dairy-alternative paneer products. Gujarat, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra have already implemented measures to restrict or ban such products within their territories, according to the plea.

The PIL seeks court directions to prevent the supply of synthetic paneer in Delhi, citing concerns about consumer protection and food safety standards. The petition argues that dairy analogues can mislead consumers and potentially violate labelling and food safety regulations.

FSSAI, the apex food safety regulator, has been asked to file its response and clarify the regulatory framework governing non-dairy paneer products. The authority's stand is expected to provide clarity on whether current guidelines adequately protect consumers and whether uniform restrictions across states are warranted.

The case underscores growing concerns across India about synthetic and analogue food products, with consumer advocates and state governments increasingly scrutinizing their production and marketing practices. The court's decision could set precedent for how alternative dairy products are regulated across the country.
