The Delhi High Court has initiated proceedings on a public interest petition challenging the sale of synthetic paneer substitutes in the Indian market. A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma issued notices to the Union government, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), and the Delhi administration, seeking their detailed responses within six weeks.
The petition raises concerns about analogue products—synthetic cheese alternatives—being sold to consumers under the paneer label without adequate disclosure or regulatory oversight. Such products are typically manufactured using vegetable oils, proteins, and emulsifiers rather than traditional dairy milk, raising questions about consumer protection and labeling standards.
The bench's move indicates judicial concern over potential consumer deception in the dairy products market. FSSAI, the nodal agency responsible for food safety and standards in India, will need to clarify existing regulations governing the manufacture, labeling, and sale of cheese analogues and their distinction from genuine paneer.
The case comes amid growing scrutiny of food adulteration and mislabeling practices in India. Consumer advocacy groups have previously flagged concerns about synthetic cheese products being marketed without clear identification, potentially misleading buyers seeking authentic dairy paneer. The court's intervention suggests a need for stricter regulatory framework and enforcement mechanisms in this segment of the food industry.
