Delhi imposes heavy fines, turns back polluting vehicles in crackdown

Delhi's pollution control authorities have launched a stringent enforcement campaign targeting vehicles that fail to meet environmental standards, resulting in substantial penalties and traffic diversions. The drive saw authorities fine violators with a combined amount exceeding Rs 68.4 lakh, demonstrating a renewed commitment to tackling vehicular emissions that contribute significantly to the city's deteriorating air quality.

As part of the operation, traffic personnel redirected around 1,500 vehicles that did not comply with pollution norms, preventing them from entering restricted zones during peak pollution hours. The enforcement action targeted both commercial and private vehicles emitting excessive pollutants, with particular focus on older models and those lacking valid pollution certificates.

The crackdown reflects Delhi's ongoing struggle with air pollution, particularly during winter months when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants and exacerbate the problem. Authorities have indicated that such enforcement drives will continue as a key component of the broader strategy to improve air quality in the capital region.

This initiative aligns with Delhi's Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which prescribes increasingly stringent measures based on air quality indices. Officials emphasized that stricter vehicle emission standards and regular compliance checks are essential to reduce the city's pollution burden and protect public health.
