Delhi imposes strict pollution curbs as winter smog season approaches

Delhi authorities have announced a sweeping set of anti-pollution measures effective from November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, as the national capital braces for its annual winter smog crisis. The restrictions represent an escalation in the government's efforts to combat deteriorating air quality during the cooler months when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants close to ground level.

The package includes staggered office timings to reduce peak-hour traffic congestion, doubled parking charges to discourage private vehicle use, and construction activity bans across the city. Officials will conduct weekly inspections at pollution hotspots to monitor compliance and identify emerging sources of air degradation. The measures aim to reduce emissions from transport, dust, and construction—identified as major contributors to winter air pollution.

Work-from-home arrangements will be encouraged for government and private sector employees where feasible, potentially reducing vehicular traffic by a significant margin during the three-month period. Parking fee increases are designed to incentivize the use of public transportation and carpooling among commuters.

The winter pollution phenomenon has become an annual concern for Delhi and surrounding areas, with air quality indices frequently reaching hazardous levels. Last year's winter saw multiple instances of severe air pollution that prompted school closures and health advisories. Experts attribute the seasonal crisis to crop burning in neighboring states, vehicle emissions, and meteorological factors that prevent pollutant dispersal.
