Delhi Invokes Essential Services Act to Ban Bus Strikes for Six Months

The Delhi administration has formally invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act to enforce a six-month ban on strikes affecting bus operations, a move designed to safeguard commuter interests and maintain transport continuity in the city.

Under the provisions of ESMA, strikes in sectors designated as essential services can be legally prohibited. The decision comes as the transport sector, critical to the functioning of India's capital, has faced periodic disruptions due to labour disputes and wage-related grievances.

The measure is expected to provide stability to Delhi's public transport system, which serves as a primary mode of commuting for millions of residents across the city and its adjoining areas. Officials stated that the six-month period would allow for structured dialogue between authorities and transport unions to address pending issues.

The invocation of ESMA reflects the government's determination to prevent service interruptions that have historically caused significant inconvenience to commuters and disrupted daily economic activity. Transport unions will have recourse to other legal remedies to pursue their grievances during the stipulated period.
