Delhi Invokes Stage 1 Pollution Curbs as Air Quality Deteriorates Sharply

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) triggered GRAP-1 restrictions in Delhi on October 21 after the air quality index climbed to 244 by 2 p.m., marking a significant deterioration in the capital's air quality. The decision came as atmospheric conditions continued to worsen across the National Capital Region, prompting authorities to activate the first stage of their pollution control protocol.

Under GRAP-1, authorities have announced enhanced enforcement measures including stricter fines for double parking violations and restrictions on vehicle operations. The measures are designed to reduce vehicular emissions, which contribute substantially to Delhi's seasonal air pollution crisis.

The activation of GRAP-1 represents the initial step in a four-tier emergency response system designed to combat severe air pollution. As winter approaches and meteorological conditions become less favorable for pollutant dispersion, the capital typically experiences a sharp deterioration in air quality due to factors including crop burning in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollution.

Authorities indicated that additional measures could be implemented if air quality continues to decline, potentially escalating to higher stages of the response plan that include stricter vehicle bans and construction suspensions.
