Delhi L-G orders urgent safety audit of parks following assault

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has ordered an immediate safety audit of Delhi's parks in response to a recent assault case, seeking to bolster security infrastructure across the city's recreational spaces. The review is to be completed within one week and will focus on critical safety parameters including adequate illumination, physical security arrangements, patrol frequency, and maintenance standards.

The directive comes in the wake of the incident at Astha Kunj, a popular park in the capital, which has renewed concerns about public safety in shared recreational areas. Authorities have identified gaps in existing security protocols and infrastructure that require urgent remedial action.

The Lieutenant Governor's order encompasses all parks across Delhi, signaling a broad-based approach to address safety concerns. The audit will examine current lighting systems, CCTV coverage where available, police patrol schedules, and general upkeep of park facilities.

As part of the response measures, authorities are also deploying the Pink Police—all-women police teams dedicated to addressing crimes against women. These dedicated units are expected to increase their presence in parks and other public spaces frequented by women and children.

The safety review marks an escalation in efforts to address women's security in public spaces, with officials emphasizing that parks must be safe, well-maintained environments accessible to all residents regardless of time of day.
