Delhi launches free rooftop solar scheme for households

The Delhi government has rolled out a new rooftop solar initiative aimed at reducing electricity bills and generating income for eligible households across the capital. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can have solar systems of up to 3 kilowatts installed on their rooftops without any initial payment required.

Applications for the program began on September 21, marking the formal launch of the government's push toward residential solar adoption. The scheme is designed to allow participating families to either eliminate their electricity bills entirely or generate revenue by feeding excess power back to the grid.

The Delhi administration has set an ambitious target of connecting 2.30 lakh households to the rooftop solar program by March 2027. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to increase renewable energy penetration and reduce dependence on conventional power sources in the National Capital Region.

Eligible families seeking to participate can submit applications through the designated government portal. Officials have emphasized that the scheme removes financial barriers to solar installation, making clean energy accessible to a wider segment of the urban population.
