Delhi launches sweeping crackdown on unsafe buildings after deadly collapse

Municipal authorities in Delhi have ramped up a citywide demolition and enforcement drive targeting dangerous structures and building code violations, following the catastrophic collapse of a paying guest accommodation in the Satya Niketan area that resulted in seven fatalities and at least five injuries.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) deployed teams across all administrative zones of the national capital on Thursday to identify and act against structures deemed unsafe or in violation of building regulations. Demolition operations were visible in multiple neighbourhoods including Laxmi Nagar, Jagatpuri and Pandav Nagar, with civic officials systematically dismantling non-compliant buildings.

Over the preceding 2-3 days, MCD enforcement teams had also conducted operations in Vishwas Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Karam Pura, Karol Bagh, Ramesh Nagar, Mansarovar Garden, Chandni Chowk and Nehru Vihar. Authorities indicated the comprehensive drive would continue through these areas.

As part of the response to the Satya Niketan incident, the MCD resumed controlled demolition of the building adjacent to the structure that collapsed on September 6, with officials confirming the neighbouring building was being removed due to structural concerns. The accelerated enforcement action underscores municipal efforts to prevent further building disasters across the capital.
