Delhi markets suffer ₹2,000 crore losses amid protest disruptions

Delhi's retail markets are reeling from significant disruptions caused by ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar, with traders estimating cumulative losses of approximately ₹2,000 crore as the festive season begins, traditionally the year's most lucrative period for commerce.

The demonstrations have severely impacted foot traffic and business operations across Delhi's major commercial hubs, forcing shopkeepers and businesses to curtail operations or close temporarily. The timing is particularly damaging as retailers typically capitalize on the festive months—a critical revenue window that accounts for substantial annual profits.

In response to the escalating losses, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and other trade associations have formally written to the protest organizers, calling for an immediate cessation of demonstrations or a relocation away from commercial zones. Trade representatives have emphasized that while the right to protest is acknowledged, the indiscriminate impact on livelihoods and the broader economy cannot be sustained indefinitely.

Business groups are also appealing to Delhi authorities to facilitate dialogue between protesters and stakeholders to reach a resolution that allows normal commercial activity to resume. Traders have warned that prolonged disruptions could result in further economic deterioration and job losses across retail and allied sectors during a period when businesses depend heavily on seasonal demand.
