The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court on Wednesday clarifying that metro operations continued largely unaffected during the recent protests in Delhi. According to the corporation's compliance report, over 85 per cent of the 303-station network remained fully operational and accessible to commuters throughout the period.
The DMRC stated that entry and exit restrictions were imposed at only 45 stations, representing 15 per cent of the total network. The corporation emphasized that these regulatory measures were implemented based on assessments and directions provided by law enforcement agencies to manage movement in sensitive areas during the demonstrations.
Passenger traffic data reveals the impact of the restrictions on commuter patterns. The DMRC recorded approximately 32 lakh passengers boarding metro trains on October 10, 2026, compared to the usual 58 lakh passengers recorded on a normal second Saturday. This represents a decline of roughly 45 per cent, attributed primarily to the restricted access at the affected stations.
The compliance report was filed following an October 9 order from the Supreme Court directing the DMRC to provide detailed information regarding service disruptions and operational changes during the protest period. The corporation's statement underscores its efforts to balance public safety concerns with maintaining essential transport connectivity for the city's commuters.
