The Supreme Court intervened in restrictions imposed on public transport in the national capital, directing the Centre and Delhi Police to reconsider blanket closures of metro and rail services ahead of planned protests scheduled for Saturday. The apex court's directive prompted the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to revise its earlier order that would have shuttered multiple stations across the network.
Initially, authorities had announced that 45 Delhi Metro stations would remain closed in anticipation of demonstrations in the city. However, following the Supreme Court's rebuke over the broad nature of these restrictions, the DMRC modified its stance to allow partial operations while maintaining selective closures at sensitive locations.
The Supreme Court emphasized that while security measures are necessary, blanket restrictions on essential public services require careful consideration and proportionality. The bench expressed concern that indiscriminate closures inconvenience ordinary citizens and disrupt normal economic activity.
Authorities have been directed to adopt a more targeted approach, balancing security concerns with the public's right to mobility and access to essential services. The revised arrangement aims to maintain law and order while permitting metro operations in areas not directly affected by the planned protests.
