Delhi-NCR activates Stage 1 curbs as air quality slides into poor zone

Authorities have invoked the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the Delhi-NCR region after air quality index readings entered the 'poor' category. The measure kicks in when AQI levels breach the 201-300 threshold.

Delhi-NCR activates Stage 1 curbs as air quality slides into poor zone

The implementation of Stage 1 GRAP marks the beginning of a tiered intervention strategy designed to combat deteriorating air quality in India's capital region. Under these initial restrictions, authorities typically issue advisories urging the public to limit outdoor activities and seek medical attention if experiencing respiratory symptoms. Industrial and construction activities may also face enhanced scrutiny to ensure compliance with environmental guidelines.

The Air Quality Index, which measures concentrations of major pollutants including particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, had crossed into the 'poor' category, prompting swift action from regional environmental authorities. At these pollution levels, members of vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions—are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.

Stage 1 represents the mildest intervention in GRAP's four-tier framework. Should air quality continue to deteriorate further, additional restrictions under Stages 2, 3, and 4 could be progressively implemented, potentially including stricter vehicle regulations, school closures, and broader industrial shutdowns.

The activation reflects seasonal patterns typical for the Delhi-NCR region, where air quality commonly declines during winter months due to increased heating demands, agricultural burning in neighbouring states, and meteorological conditions that trap pollutants near ground level.
