Delhi-NCR Air Quality Deteriorates; Stage 1 Curbs Activated

The worsening air quality in Delhi and surrounding areas has triggered Stage 1 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a tiered framework designed to combat seasonal air pollution in India's capital region.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) initiated the measures after air quality indices crossed thresholds indicating poor conditions. Stage 1 represents the initial level of intervention, typically involving advisory measures and enhanced monitoring rather than strict operational restrictions.

Authorities have instructed all relevant agencies and departments to accelerate their pollution mitigation efforts. These directives are expected to encompass stricter construction site management, increased road sweeping and dust suppression, and monitoring of vehicular emissions across the region.

The deterioration in air quality during this season reflects a recurring challenge for Delhi-NCR, driven by factors including local emissions, crop residue burning in neighboring states, and meteorological conditions that trap pollutants over the region. The GRAP framework allows authorities to escalate restrictions progressively if air quality continues to deteriorate, with later stages potentially including vehicle movement restrictions and industrial shutdowns.
