Delhi-NCR braces for rising pollution as winter sets in with light winds
Air quality levels in the Delhi-NCR region are expected to deteriorate as the winter season begins, with meteorological conditions proving unfavourable for pollution dispersal. The India Meteorological Department forecasts stagnant atmospheric conditions across northern India in the coming days.

Air pollution concentrations in Delhi and the National Capital Region are anticipated to climb as winter weather patterns establish themselves, with reduced wind speeds limiting the natural dispersal of pollutants, according to meteorological assessments.
The India Meteorological Department indicates that northern India, including Uttar Pradesh, is unlikely to experience significant weather disturbances in the near term. These stable atmospheric conditions typically characterise early winter in the region and contribute to the seasonal accumulation of particulate matter.
In contrast, weather systems affecting central and western India are expected to generate stronger wind activity across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, potentially aiding pollution dispersal in those regions. Southern India is forecast to experience intensified rainfall activity over the coming period.
The seasonal rise in air pollution across the Indo-Gangetic Plain during winter months is a recurring concern for environmental and health authorities. The combination of lower temperatures, reduced atmospheric mixing, and agricultural burning practices in neighbouring states typically exacerbates air quality degradation during this period.
