Delhi-NCR breaks October rainfall record as temperatures plummet
Heavy downpours across Delhi and the National Capital Region on Monday morning shattered a four-year precipitation record for October, bringing relief from the season's heat and improving air quality significantly.

Torrential rainfall lashed Delhi in the early hours of Monday, marking the wettest October day in four years for the capital region. The India Meteorological Department recorded 41.6 millimeters of precipitation at the Safdarjung weather station, exceeding typical October rainfall patterns and breaking the previous benchmark for the month.
The intense overnight showers brought tangible relief to residents as temperatures dropped markedly below seasonal averages. The cooler conditions followed the sustained rainfall, providing respite from the lingering heat that has characterized much of the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon period.
Air quality metrics also showed substantial improvement following the downpour. Delhi's average Air Quality Index (AQI) settled at 83, reflecting the moisture-laden conditions that helped settle particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere. The favorable AQI reading suggests the rainfall's contribution to mitigating air pollution levels that often persist during the transition months.
Weather officials attributed the unseasonable October rainfall to prevailing atmospheric conditions, with further monitoring expected as the meteorological department tracks subsequent weather patterns affecting the region. The moisture-laden system offered a departure from typical dry October conditions normally experienced in the Delhi-NCR belt.
