Delhi-NCR chokes as air quality index soars past 400
Air quality in Delhi and surrounding National Capital Region has deteriorated to severe levels, with multiple areas recording Air Quality Index readings exceeding 400. Despite implementation of Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan, pollution levels remain critically high.

Delhi-NCR residents are facing hazardous air quality conditions as the region enters the post-Diwali period, with Air Quality Index measurements breaching the 400 mark across several localities. The severe air pollution has made breathing difficult for millions, prompting authorities to enforce Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-3) in a bid to curb emissions.
GRAP-3 restrictions include a ban on non-essential construction activities, closure of schools, and increased enforcement against polluting vehicles and industries. However, these measures have proven insufficient in improving air quality, which continues to remain in the severe category affecting public health across the region.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that atmospheric conditions in the coming days may further deteriorate pollution levels. A combination of meteorological factors, including reduced wind speed and temperature inversions, typically traps pollutants near the ground during this season, compounding the air quality crisis.
Experts attribute the severe pollution to multiple sources including crop burning in neighbouring Punjab and Haryana, vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and dust from construction sites. Environmental agencies have urged residents to take preventive health measures, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
