Delhi-NCR invokes Stage III pollution curbs as air quality deteriorates

The Delhi-NCR region has implemented Stage III of GRAP in response to deteriorating air quality levels, marking an escalation in the government's pollution management protocol. The action plan, triggered when air quality reaches hazardous levels, imposes a range of restrictions aimed at reducing emissions across the metropolitan area.

Under Stage III provisions, authorities have imposed stricter controls on construction and demolition activities, banned the use of diesel generators in non-essential services, and intensified monitoring of industrial pollution. The measure also encourages the adoption of work-from-home policies and restricts the entry of heavy commercial vehicles in certain zones.

The deterioration in air quality comes during the pre-Diwali period, when firecracker usage traditionally compounds existing pollution levels. The region experiences seasonal air quality challenges during winter months due to stubble burning in neighboring agricultural areas and meteorological factors that trap pollutants in the lower atmosphere.

The GRAP framework operates on a four-stage escalation system, with Stage I being the mildest intervention and Stage IV representing an emergency lockdown scenario. Authorities continue monitoring air quality indices to determine whether further restrictions or relaxations are warranted in the coming days.
