Delhi-NCR rain brings relief, but air quality remains hazardous

Delhi and its surrounding regions experienced pleasant weather conditions following weekend rainfall, yet persistent air pollution has continued to plague the national capital territory. Despite the meteorological improvement, air quality measurements remained in the hazardous category across numerous locations in the metropolitan area.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, Sunday recordings showed dangerously elevated air quality index levels at key monitoring stations. The Air Quality Index at IIT Delhi reached 254, while the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium recorded a reading of 229. Delhi Technological University reported an AQI of 203, all significantly exceeding the 200-mark threshold that indicates severe air pollution.

The persistence of poor air quality despite recent rainfall underscores the entrenched nature of Delhi-NCR's pollution challenge. Experts attribute the lingering poor conditions to accumulated pollutants and meteorological factors that trap contaminants in the region's atmosphere, even when precipitation provides temporary weather relief.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to take precautions, including limiting outdoor activities and using air quality monitoring apps to track real-time pollution levels in their localities.
