Delhi-NCR States Advised to Suspend School Sports During Winter Months

Regional air quality management officials have issued guidance to educational authorities across four states to halt school-based sports events and outdoor competitions during the winter months, citing concerns over deteriorating atmospheric conditions.

The advisory, issued by the air quality panel overseeing the National Capital Region and surrounding states, targets November and December when air pollution typically peaks across northern India. The recommendation encompasses all physical sports activities and competitive events scheduled during this period.

The directive applies to schools in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, regions that experience significant air quality degradation during winter due to crop burning, vehicular emissions, and meteorological factors that trap pollutants near the surface.

Educational institutions in these states have been urged to postpone outdoor athletic events, inter-school competitions, and sports days until air quality improves. The measure aims to reduce student exposure to hazardous particulate matter and other pollutants during peak pollution season.

The advisory reflects growing concerns about the health impacts of air pollution on children and the need for coordinated action across state boundaries to protect vulnerable populations during the winter season.
