Delhi-NCR tightens pollution controls with fuel pump PUC checks

The Delhi-NCR region has escalated its pre-winter pollution control measures, with petrol pumps now required to verify the validity of Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates before dispensing fuel to vehicles. Starting October 1st, fuel stations have begun cross-checking vehicle registration numbers against PUC databases to ensure only compliant vehicles gain access to petrol and CNG.

The initiative represents a significant hardening of environmental enforcement in India's capital region as air quality typically deteriorates during winter months due to meteorological conditions and increased emissions. Officials have established verification systems at fuel pumps to automatically screen vehicle credentials at the point of sale, effectively preventing non-compliant vehicles from refueling.

Beyond the PUC restrictions, authorities are simultaneously ramping up monitoring and enforcement action across multiple pollution sources. These include stricter scrutiny of older vehicles, agricultural stubble burning, road dust emissions, and industrial pollution sources. The multi-pronged approach aims to address the region's persistent air quality challenges before the winter season intensifies.

The PUC certificate, renewed annually or biannually depending on vehicle age, certifies that a vehicle meets national emission standards. By restricting fuel access to vehicles without valid certificates, authorities aim to create a direct economic incentive for vehicle owners to maintain compliance with environmental regulations.
