Delhi-NCR to restrict light commercial vehicle registrations from 2027
The Commission for Air Quality Management has approved a phased approach to curb new light goods vehicle registrations across the Delhi-NCR region, with restrictions on petrol, diesel and CNG models set to take effect in the capital from January 2027.

The CAQM's decision marks an escalation in efforts to combat air pollution in India's most polluted region, targeting the commercial vehicle segment that contributes significantly to vehicular emissions. The restrictions will initially apply to N1 category light goods vehicles—commercial vehicles with a maximum gross weight of 3.5 tonnes—and are expected to be implemented progressively across the National Capital Region.
Delhi will become the first jurisdiction in the region to enforce the new curbs, with the ban covering petrol, diesel and compressed natural gas variants simultaneously. The phased implementation suggests that other NCR states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan may face similar restrictions in subsequent phases, though timelines remain to be finalized.
The measure reflects growing pressure from environmental groups and government agencies to reduce vehicle emissions during winter months when air quality in the region deteriorates significantly. Light commercial vehicles are widely used for goods transport and last-mile delivery operations across the Delhi-NCR region, making the registration restrictions a significant policy intervention in the logistics and e-commerce sectors.
Industry stakeholders are expected to face a transition period as the January 2027 deadline approaches. The CAQM is likely to release detailed guidelines on implementation, exemptions and compliance mechanisms in coming months.
