Delhi-NCR triggers Stage-1 pollution curbs as air quality deteriorates post-Dussehra
The Commission for Air Quality Management has activated the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan in the National Capital Region following a sharp decline in air quality. The restrictions will remain in effect until conditions improve.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has initiated Stage-1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi and the National Capital Region as air quality indices have dropped to hazardous levels in the days following Dussehra celebrations. The action came into effect on Wednesday as monitoring agencies confirmed deteriorating air quality across the region.
Stage-1 interventions represent the first tier of emergency measures designed to combat air pollution and include steps such as enhanced monitoring, increased public awareness campaigns, and stricter adherence to dust control measures at construction sites. The CAQM has directed all relevant agencies to implement, monitor and review the prescribed actions under the stage.
The timing of the restrictions coincides with seasonal factors that typically worsen air quality in North India during October and November, compounded by post-festival smoke and emissions. Meteorological conditions, including lower wind speeds and temperature inversions, trap pollutants closer to the ground, exacerbating the problem.
Authorities have appealed to residents to limit outdoor activities and follow precautions. The CAQM will continue to review air quality data and escalate restrictions to higher stages if pollution levels continue to rise beyond prescribed thresholds.
