Delhi-NCR triggers Stage 2 pollution curbs as air quality plummets

The Delhi-National Capital Region has implemented Stage 2 anti-pollution measures following a sharp spike in Air Quality Index readings that have crossed the 300 mark, signalling severe air quality conditions. The Graded Response Action Plan, a set of escalating interventions triggered at different pollution thresholds, was activated to mitigate the region's worsening environmental crisis.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, various curbs have been imposed to reduce emission sources. These typically include enhanced traffic management measures, restrictions on non-essential construction activities, and advisories for vulnerable populations to limit outdoor exposure. Authorities have also directed industrial facilities to curtail operations or adopt stricter emission controls.

The poor air quality has been attributed to a confluence of factors common to the winter season in North India, including crop residue burning in neighbouring states, vehicular emissions, and meteorological conditions that trap pollutants near the ground. The dense smog has raised health concerns across the region, particularly for children, elderly persons, and those with respiratory conditions.

Residents have been advised to use air purifiers, wear protective masks when venturing outdoors, and monitor official air quality updates. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring pollution levels and may escalate to higher stages of the action plan if conditions deteriorate further.
