Delhi petrol pumps enforce fuel ban for vehicles without pollution certificates

The Delhi government has rolled out a stringent new enforcement mechanism at around 500 fuel retail outlets across the capital to ensure vehicle compliance with pollution control standards. The initiative, designed to curb air quality deterioration before pollution levels spike, integrates automated camera systems with the transport department's vehicle database to verify pollution certificates in real time.

Under the 'No PUC, No Fuel' protocol, petrol pump attendants will be unable to dispense fuel to vehicles without valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. The system relies on digital verification against official transport records, creating an automated checkpoint at the point of fuel sale.

Vehicle owners who fail to obtain or renew their PUC certificates within the prescribed deadline face fines of up to ₹10,000. The enforcement mechanism represents a significant shift toward leveraging retail infrastructure and technology to ensure environmental compliance in the transport sector.

The move reflects escalating concerns over Delhi's air quality during winter months, when pollution levels typically surge. By creating a direct financial incentive—the inability to refuel—authorities aim to ensure higher compliance rates with emission standards than traditional penalty-based systems have achieved.
