Delhi Police bust fake Apple support scam targeting US residents

Delhi Police have shut down a fraudulent call centre in the Naraina area that operated as a fake Apple support facility, targeting residents of the United States. The operation, which involved seven arrested individuals, systematically defrauded victims by posing as representatives of the technology giant and convincing them to purchase gift cards.

The scam leveraged social engineering tactics common to tech support fraud schemes, wherein callers would contact US residents claiming to represent Apple and convince them there were urgent security or technical issues with their devices. Victims were then directed to purchase gift cards as payment for supposed remedial services or security updates.

The call centre, which operated from a commercial space in Naraina, maintained the appearance of a legitimate technical support facility complete with workstations and communication equipment. Investigators discovered evidence of systematic operations targeting multiple victims across the United States over an extended period.

The arrests mark another significant action against overseas scam operations targeting Western consumers. Indian authorities have increasingly focused on dismantling such centres, which often employ residents while routing fraudulent transactions through international payment systems.

The case highlights the persistent challenge law enforcement faces in combating technically sophisticated fraud networks that exploit international boundaries and rely on social manipulation rather than direct cyber attacks.
