Delhi Police cracks down on social media accounts spreading false narratives

Delhi Police has registered four first information reports (FIRs) against social media accounts engaged in systematic dissemination of false and inflammatory content, according to officials familiar with the matter. The cases target handles that authorities allege were operating with the intent to create an "anti-India narrative" and undermine public order.

Investigators determined that the flagged accounts were circulating misleading information designed to incite tensions and disturb communal harmony across the national capital. Several of the accounts under scrutiny have been traced to Pakistan-based operators, officials confirmed, suggesting a coordinated effort to amplify divisive content aimed at Indian audiences.

The crackdown reflects growing concern among law enforcement agencies about the misuse of social media platforms to spread disinformation and manipulate public sentiment. Authorities have intensified monitoring of cross-border digital activity, particularly accounts that engage in what officials characterize as coordinated information warfare.

The cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code addressing public order offences and potentially provisions related to seditious content. Investigation teams are continuing to track additional accounts suspected of participating in similar activities, officials said.
