Delhi Police File Case Against JNU Professor Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Delhi police have initiated legal proceedings against the senior JNU faculty member after registering an FIR in connection with allegations of sexual harassment. According to police officials, the case has been lodged under sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv), and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India's new criminal code that came into effect earlier this year.

The complaint against Akoijam marks the latest in a series of sexual harassment cases involving university faculty members across Indian academic institutions. The university administration has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations or the police action.

Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the sections cited in the FIR relate to offences of sexual harassment and abuse. The investigation is expected to proceed through standard police procedures, including gathering of evidence and statements from relevant parties.

The case adds to ongoing concerns about workplace safety and accountability within premier educational institutions in the country. Further developments in the investigation are awaited.
