The Delhi Police's specialized Internet and Social Media Forensic Operations (IFSO) unit has opened an investigation into a viral video that captured racial abuse directed at a youth from Tripura, marking a significant step in addressing online hate content circulating across digital platforms.
Police personnel visited the residence of Amir Shokeen, identified as the content creator behind the footage, as part of their preliminary investigation. However, a senior police official indicated that Shokeen could not be located during the visit, with preliminary reports suggesting he may have absconded.
The viral video has sparked considerable concern about the prevalence of racist harassment on social media platforms, particularly targeting individuals from India's northeastern states. The incident underscores growing efforts by law enforcement agencies to tackle online abuse and hate speech that violates India's existing digital and criminal laws.
The IFSO unit, which specializes in cyber crimes and digital forensics, is expected to trace the origin of the video, identify all individuals involved, and determine applicable charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities attempt to locate the suspect.
