Delhi Police's Crime Branch has launched an investigation into violence that broke out during a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demonstration in the national capital on July 20, according to police sources on Thursday. The probe will focus on identifying individuals responsible for the clashes and determining whether the violence was organised in advance.
The fresh FIR comes after the Supreme Court directed Delhi Police to cancel 17 earlier FIRs registered at multiple police stations in the New Delhi district. Crime Branch teams will also investigate whether criminal elements infiltrated protest sites following the CJP's call for a march, police sources said.
The development precedes another CJP protest scheduled to be held at Jantar Mantar, where organisers plan to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in a recent administrative exercise. A senior police officer stated that no permission has been granted for the planned demonstration.
The cases highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding protest activities in the national capital and the police's efforts to balance public assembly rights with maintaining law and order. Investigators will scrutinise the sequence of events during the July 20 gathering to establish accountability.
