Delhi Police summons sacked JNU professor and Congress MP over harassment case

Delhi Police has served a notice to Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, directing him to join an investigation related to sexual harassment allegations at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The notice follows the university's termination of Akoijam's position as a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU's School of Social Sciences on October 9.

Akoijam was dismissed with immediate effect following an internal inquiry initiated by the university. According to reports, at least 11 female students filed complaints of sexual harassment against him in May this year, allegations that he has denied. The complaints alleged that Akoijam invited students to his campus residence under the guise of academic meetings or social gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them.

Police authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the investigation, including the specific nature of the charges being examined or the current status of the probe. The notice to Akoijam represents a formal escalation of the matter to law enforcement authorities from the university's internal disciplinary framework.

The case has drawn attention to workplace safety and accountability mechanisms within India's premier educational institutions. As a sitting Member of Parliament, Akoijam's involvement in the case has also drawn political scrutiny, though details of his response to the police notice remain unavailable.
