Delhi Police urges redesign of Barapullah Phase-III as traffic congestion worsens
Traffic authorities in Delhi have called for urgent modifications to the newly constructed Barapullah Phase-III flyover, citing concerns that the infrastructure is exacerbating congestion rather than alleviating it. The police department has flagged critical design issues that require immediate intervention.

Delhi Police has formally requested a comprehensive redesign of the Barapullah Phase-III flyover project, citing deteriorating traffic conditions since the infrastructure came into operation. The new elevated corridor, intended to decongest key arterial routes in the capital, has instead contributed to gridlock at critical junctions and approach roads, officials said.
The traffic management challenges have prompted law enforcement to escalate concerns to civic authorities overseeing the project. Key pressure points have been identified where the flyover's design creates bottlenecks during peak hours, forcing vehicles onto already saturated alternative routes and surface roads below the structure.
According to traffic assessments, the current configuration fails to adequately address merging patterns and exit configurations that were meant to facilitate smoother vehicle flow. The police department has submitted detailed recommendations outlining modifications needed to optimize traffic distribution across the corridor and its connecting roads.
The Barapullah corridor project, a multi-phase infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity across southern and central Delhi, has faced previous implementation challenges. Officials indicated that addressing these design shortcomings requires coordination between multiple agencies, with implementation expected to commence following formal approvals.
