Delhi prepares vehicle curbs to combat air pollution; transporters warn of economic fallout

The Delhi government is preparing to introduce vehicle movement restrictions starting November 1, 2026, in a bid to tackle the region's worsening air quality. The measure is among several initiatives aimed at curbing pollution levels during the winter months when atmospheric conditions typically worsen.

The All India Motor Transport Governing and Traffic Association (AIMGTA) has requested that authorities conduct a 15-day pilot project before rolling out the full-scale restrictions. The association argues that a trial period would allow both the government and transport operators to assess the practical implications and refine implementation strategies.

Industry representatives have flagged concerns about the potential economic impact of the vehicle restrictions. The transport sector warns that widespread curbs could disrupt essential supply chains, hamper industrial operations, and affect livelihoods of workers dependent on transportation services. They have called for measures that balance environmental objectives with economic considerations.

The proposed restrictions come as Delhi continues to grapple with severe air pollution, particularly during autumn and winter months when meteorological conditions trap pollutants in the atmosphere. Vehicle emissions remain a significant contributor to the National Capital's pollution burden, alongside construction dust, industrial emissions, and agricultural burning in neighboring states.
