The Shree Keshav Ram Leela Committee, which stages the traditional Ramlila in Pitampura, has announced plans to burn a 30-foot cockroach effigy alongside the customary Ravana effigy during this year's Dussehra celebrations.
According to the organizing committee, the initiative symbolizes the elimination of filth and dirt, drawing parallels with the triumph of good over evil that the Ramlila festival represents. The cockroach effigy will serve as a visual representation of unhygienic conditions and contamination.
The committee has positioned the burning of the insect effigy as part of broader awareness campaigns aligned with the Swachh Bharat and Swachh Delhi missions. These government-backed cleanliness initiatives aim to promote sanitation and hygiene practices across urban and rural areas.
The Ramlila in Pitampura is among Delhi's prominent annual performances of the legendary story of Lord Rama, attracting large crowds during the festive season. The addition of the cockroach effigy represents an attempt to merge cultural celebrations with contemporary civic messaging on public health and environmental cleanliness.
