Delhi Ramlila to feature symbolic cockroach effigy alongside traditional Ravana burning

The inclusion of the cockroach effigy marks an unusual addition to Delhi's Ramlila festivities, one of the country's most celebrated annual enactments of the Ramayana. Traditionally, the event culminates with the burning of effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Indrajit to symbolise the victory of good over evil. Organisers said the symbolic gesture reflects contemporary social commentary alongside the classical mythological narrative.

The Cockroach Janata Party has intensified its visibility through demonstrations across Delhi in recent weeks, drawing public attention to its platform and concerns. By incorporating the cockroach effigy, Ramlila organisers acknowledged the party's sustained activism while maintaining the event's cultural and theatrical traditions.

The Ramlila Ground, located in central Delhi, hosts one of India's most attended open-air theatrical productions during the nine-day festival leading up to Dussehra. Thousands of residents and visitors gather annually to witness the elaborate staging of scenes from Hindu scripture, culminating in the dramatic burning of effigies.

Organisers stated that the addition would not diminish the significance of traditional elements while making space for contemporary expressions. The decision reflects evolving approaches to community engagement and public discourse during major cultural celebrations in the capital.
