Delhi records 524 pedestrian deaths in first 10.5 months of 2024

Delhi has recorded 524 pedestrian deaths through October 15, highlighting the persistent danger facing walkers on the capital's congested roads, according to data compiled by the city's traffic police.

Hit-and-run incidents involving unidentified vehicles emerged as the primary cause of pedestrian fatalities, accounting for 262 deaths during the period. Private cars were responsible for 69 pedestrian deaths, while two-wheelers including motorcycles and scooters claimed 56 lives.

The figures underscore ongoing concerns about road safety in India's capital, where rapid urbanisation, heavy vehicular traffic and infrastructure constraints continue to pose challenges for pedestrians. Unidentified vehicles, often driven by fleeing motorists, represent a particular problem as they complicate investigations and accountability.

Traffic authorities in Delhi have previously called for enhanced enforcement of traffic rules, improved road infrastructure and greater public awareness to reduce pedestrian casualties. The data suggests targeted interventions remain critical to protecting vulnerable road users in the city.
