Delhi riot accused seek Supreme Court bail after high court rejection

Sharjeel and Umar, accused in connection with Delhi riots cases, have approached the Supreme Court seeking bail relief after the Delhi High Court rejected their pleas. The move comes as both individuals have spent an extended period in custody awaiting trial proceedings.

The accused have raised concerns about the progress of their case, alleging that the prosecution has failed to complete examination of protected witnesses even at an advanced stage of proceedings. They contend that the delay in witness examination has resulted in an unreasonable prolongation of their detention.

According to the bail plea, the extended incarceration without substantial progress in trial proceedings constitutes a violation of their constitutional rights. The petitioners argue that the delay in the investigative and prosecutorial process cannot justify their continued confinement.

The move to approach India's apex court represents a final legal recourse available to the accused after exhausting remedies at the high court level. The Supreme Court will now determine whether the accusations and evidence presented by the prosecution justify continued preventive detention or whether bail conditions can be imposed pending trial conclusion.
