Sharjeel Imam, an activist arrested in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots, has approached the Supreme Court with a bail petition in a case filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a stringent anti-terror law.
The charge sheet in the case was filed on September 25, 2020, against 18 accused persons. According to court documents, the prosecution has lined up over 900 witnesses to support its case, of which 47 have been designated as protected witnesses due to security concerns.
The petition seeks bail relief for Imam, who has been in custody since his arrest. The move comes as the trial in the multi-accused case continues in the Delhi courts.
The 2020 Delhi riots erupted in February 2020 and claimed at least 53 lives, with hundreds injured. The violence had sparked widespread concern and triggered multiple police investigations and prosecutions against various individuals accused of involvement in the communal clashes.
