Delhi's air quality deteriorates sharply; GRAP II measures activated across NCR

Delhi's air quality has sharply deteriorated with the overall Air Quality Index climbing to 331, prompting authorities to activate Stage II curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the Delhi-National Capital Region. The pollution spike has been particularly acute in outlying areas, with Jahangirpuri recording a hazardous AQI of 449, while Noida has crossed the 300 mark, indicating severe air quality conditions.

The Commission for Air Quality Management's decision to enforce Stage II restrictions comes as seasonal factors and meteorological conditions continue to push pollution levels to concerning heights across the region. Stage II measures typically include restrictions on non-essential construction activities, increased mechanical sweeping and water sprinkling on roads, and advisories for vulnerable populations to limit outdoor exposure.

Residents across the NCR have been urged to take precautionary measures as the hazardous air quality poses significant health risks, particularly for children, elderly citizens, and those with respiratory conditions. The dense pollution has reduced visibility and prompted health advisories recommending the use of masks and limiting outdoor activities.

Authorities are monitoring air quality parameters closely with the expectation that meteorological conditions may improve in coming days. Further escalation to Stage III or Stage IV of GRAP could be invoked if pollution levels continue to worsen, bringing more stringent restrictions on vehicular movement and industrial operations.
