Delhi's air quality deteriorates to poor levels as pollution worsens

The national capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 219 at 7 am on Wednesday, marking a significant slip into the poor air quality zone. The reading underscores growing pollution concerns in the region as weather patterns and seasonal factors combine to trap pollutants over the city.

Metereological authorities have cautioned that air quality is expected to remain poor throughout the forecast period, with little relief anticipated in the near term. The deterioration comes as Delhi enters a season when atmospheric conditions typically become less favorable for pollutant dispersal.

An AQI reading between 201 and 300 falls in the poor category, where residents belonging to vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions—are advised to limit outdoor activities. The index is calculated based on concentrations of particulate matter and gases including PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone.

Residents have been advised to monitor air quality updates regularly and take appropriate precautions. Health authorities recommend wearing protective masks when stepping outdoors and maintaining indoor air quality through proper ventilation and air filtration systems.

The deteriorating air quality has renewed focus on pollution mitigation measures and the need for coordinated action across regional governments to address the persistent air quality challenges affecting millions across the National Capital Region.
