Delhi's air quality hits 287-day high as pollution crisis deepens pre-Diwali

Delhi recorded an air quality index of 350 on Tuesday, marking a significant deterioration in atmospheric conditions across the national capital. Pollution levels have now reached the severe category at 10 monitoring stations, presenting a public health emergency as residents struggle with breathing difficulties.

The spike represents a 287-day high in pollution records, occurring just days before Diwali celebrations, when air quality typically worsens further due to increased firecracker usage and vehicular congestion. Certain areas have reported AQI readings exceeding 450, well into the hazardous range that poses acute health risks to vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

In response to the deteriorating air quality, the Delhi government has implemented Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan, a set of emergency measures designed to curb pollution. These protocols typically include restrictions on construction activities, increased vehicle inspections, and advisories on industrial emissions.

Environmental experts attribute the pollution surge to stubble burning in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, and meteorological conditions that trap pollutants over the city. The situation underscores the urgent need for sustained anti-pollution measures beyond festival seasons to protect public health.
