Delhi's air quality hits severe levels as Diwali celebrations unfold

The national capital woke up to severely polluted air on Diwali, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 383 at 8 am on Wednesday. Multiple air quality monitoring stations across Delhi recorded readings exceeding 400, indicating severe pollution levels that pose significant health risks to residents.

In response to the worsening air quality, authorities have enforced Stage 3 GRAP restrictions across the Delhi-National Capital Region. These measures include a ban on non-essential construction and demolition activities, restrictions on heavy diesel vehicles, and advisories for the public to limit outdoor activities.

The poor air quality during the festival season is attributed to a combination of factors, including crop burning in neighbouring states, vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and local meteorological conditions that trap pollutants in the atmosphere. The situation is expected to persist as weather patterns continue to prevent effective dispersal of air pollutants.

Health authorities have advised residents, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to remain indoors and use air purifiers. The government has urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and minimise firecracker use to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the coming days.
